This is our second year honoring our faculty and staff members with two awards from nominations from parents and peers and have been also reviewed and affirmed by our Student Advisory Board and School Administration.  The St. John Baptist De La Salle Excellence in Teaching Award and the St. Teresa of Calcutta Staff Excellence Award recognizes teachers and staff excellence.

Our School Advisory Board, Father Bob and Principal Cinadr would like to recognize our teachers, aides, and staff for all of the special work they do for each and every child every day. For this purpose, these two awards are given annually: the St. John Baptist de La Salle Award for teachers, and the St. Teresa of Calcutta Award for aides and staff members.  While our dinner was unable to happen, we still celebrate these amazing people!

Our faculty, staff, and school families had the opportunity to nominate a teacher and staff member that has impacted their lives.  What a blessing to read all the thoughtful comments and nominations shared about our tremendous LAPS and SAS Faculty and Staff!  In this challenging end of the year it was overwhelming to read all the thoughtful comments of how our faculty and staff have continued to go above and beyond for our students and families.  Please join me in congratulating the winners for 2020 below!

St. John Baptist de La Salle Excellence in Teaching Award

2020 Winner:  Mrs. Kelly Thompson, Fourth Grade Teacher, Saint Ambrose School.

2019 Winner:  Mrs. Susan Kautzman, Kindergarten Teacher, Saint Ambrose School.

The St. John Baptist de La Salle Excellence in Teaching Award recognized an outstanding Preschool-8th grade teacher who is nominated by parents, faculty and staff on 4 qualities.  They are nominated on how they INSPIRE others on a consistent basis, how they INNOVATE by leading their students in Next Generation skills and STREAM learning;  how they PROCLAIM and shine in their Christian values and serve as a model for others;  and their EXCELLENCE in rigor, faith-based learning and social-emotional connection and development.

This year’s 2020 nominee always “encourages the students to continue to REACH and be their best and be accountable.” They motivate their students to be their best self….and inspires students to learn.  This individual exemplifies this by working individually to connect with each of their students to understand what works for them to learn best and inspire their best work and  does an amazing job of differentiated learning.”

“This 2020 award nominee exemplifies excellence. They go ABOVE and BEYOND. over and over, whether its a one on one parent meeting, student review, stopping to take time to understand what works best for the individual student even if it takes more time and even taking time away from her family to attend her student’s volleyball game on the weekend.  “She believes in her students and pushes them to do their very best.  She challenges their knowledge and recognizes a job well done.”  When the Ohio Capital field trip was cancelled, Mrs. Thompson reached out to our representatives and invited them to join students virtually for an incredible learning experience about Ohio.  She did not stop there!  She also was able to connect students with retired CAVS players for a virtual meeting on leadership!

“Mrs. Thompson has been an amazing asset to the Bridge team since she arrived at Saint Ambrose last year.  She is beyond committed to her students, and is passionate about teaching them skills to last a lifetime.   When she gives a study guide to her students, she makes sure to break down how to study for her test.  This is teaching them study skills that they will carry with them throughout their education.  She is always looking for new ways to engage her students, whether it be through a new online learning site or having the students talk to State Congressmen.  Mrs. Thompson always answers questions and listens when the student or parent has a question or concern.”

Mrs. Thompson was also instrumental in implementing a real-world problem-based learning experience for students that received National Acclaim as a finalist for National Innovations in Catholic Education and was featured in Today’s Catholic Teacher Magazine.  Kelly initiated and then collaborated with Fourth- and fifth-grade teachers for a cross-curricular learning project and formed a partnership with a local contractor. SilverApple, an education partner with Saint Ambrose School for the past four years, facilitated the partnership between the school and the contractor and provided training for teachers to effectively plan and implement the Baby Boomers Project. Students helped to design communities for the aging Baby Boomer generation, learned about the construction industry, studied the needs of an aging population, and created virtual-reality and print presentations of their designs for actual housing customers.

We are proud to announce and honor Mrs. Kelly Thompson as the 2020 St.St. John Baptist de La Salle Excellence in Teaching Award Winner!  Congratulations Mrs. Kelly Thompson and thank you for EVERYTHING you do each and every day for our students, families, faculty, staff and community.  May God continue to bless you as you are such a shining example even during these last 10 weeks while juggling your work as a dedicated and creative teacher while assisting your own children with their virtual education at home!
