HSP Weekly Update

Mr. Dziedzicki- Assistant Principal, HSP Director, 8th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics

What a fantastic week across all of HSP! 7th & 8th grade retreats took place. 6th grade received their chromebooks. Classes are in full effect. The students should certainly be ready for a long weekend! I hope you enjoy spending time with your families!

Here are some thoughts from the rest of our HSP Faculty…

Mrs. Hamzik- 8th Grade Homeroom, Science

Grade six is off to an incredible start as they explore the world through microscopes.  They will begin the study of cells next week.

Grade seven has been examining the characteristics of life and how we classify living things.  Living things and the environment is our upcoming topic.

Grade eight has launched off the year by studying the Earth in space. They will be researching early astronomers and major events in space exploration. Count down until we have our rocket launch.

Ms. Noga- 7th Grade Homeroom, Social Studies

It was a wonderful week in HSP social studies!

In sixth grade, we covered basic history and archaeology vocabulary and concepts. We also began to review geography terms and skills from last year. Next week, the students will continue to demonstrate knowledge of geography and maps. We will have a quiz next Friday over chapter 1.

It was a blessing to be able to celebrate a faithful retreat with the seventh-graders this week. In addition, we began the week by learning about the geography of Greece and how it affected the ancient Greeks’ lives and civilizations. The students also performed a short play about the Trojan Horse and then “ambushed” other classrooms trying to “rescue Helen of Troy.” Over the next few weeks, I will introduce Greek mythology with some more memorable activities.

The eighth-graders began with a review of basic geographical themes, concepts and skills. These students also had the opportunity to meet with Congressman Bob Gibbs and ask him questions. Next week we will continue studying the nation’s landforms, climate, resources and more.

I continue to be amazed by your children!

Mr. LaGuardia- 7th Grade Homeroom, English/Language Arts

What a week for 6-8 ELA! We worked a lot and had a lot of fun doing it. Students received some of their first grades and took their first quiz of the year in ELA. They also took part in retreats (three separate ones). So, it was a wild week, and I think everyone is ready for a restful weekend before the start of September. Have a great weekend!

Ms. Kadlec- 6th Grade Homeroom, Religion

This has been an exciting, busy, and spiritual week.

The 8th graders finished identifying some of the images of the Church by creating drawings with pertinent bible verses. They also experienced a day filled with spiritual activities during their retreat on Tuesday. Not only did they begin the day with the celebration of Mass but ended the day with the sacrament of Reconciliation.

7th grade also enjoyed a spiritual experience on Thursday.  The young ladies went to River’s Edge Retreat Center in Rocky River to focus on what it means to be a Catholic/Christian woman. Ask them about Sr. Juanita. The gentlemen went to the Cuyahoga National Park for a 7 mile hike to focus on Contemplative prayer and God’s creation.

6th grade began using their Religion books to explore the meaning of God’s Revelation, Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. They will be making slide shows of one of the two Creation stories from Genesis.

Enjoy this long weekend and God bless!

Mr. Mullen- 6th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics

This week in six grade math we wrapped up learning about the different number sets and the students took an assessment. We will move forward with learning about the rational numbers ( fractions and decimals) and review how to add, subtract, multiply, and divide with them. This will be done in the context of a larger problem based learning activity where students will be asked to plan the opening of their own bakery.

In seventh grade math this week we wrapped up learning about the various number sets in our number system. Moving forward next week we will learn about how to operate with integers. Students also took a pretest on the skill so various groups maybe working on different types of problems related to this skill depending on the results of the pretest. Students were also asked to participate in a problem based learning activity where they take on various roles as a concrete company hired to refinish the back parking lot. Students will have to research measure and complete all the math involved in figuring out how much it would cost. This will be used as a springboard for reviewing and moving forward with integers and rational numbers.

This week in eighth grade math, students wrapped up a short intro unit  on the various number sets in our number system. Students also were asked to take a pretest for the next unit on expressions and equations. Depending on the results of that pre-test students will be working on the skills they need to master moving forward.
