Here are some thoughts from the rest of the HSP faculty…

Ms. Noga- 7th Grade Homeroom, Social Studies

Welcome to the second quarter! We wrapped up quarter one with a few fun projects. The sixth-graders researched various Sumerian inventions and created Google Slideshows about them. We will continue our Mesopotamian unit, discussing the Babylonians and Hammurabi’s Code. The seventh-graders designed impressively creative Powtoon presentations recruiting people to live in either Athens or Sparta. Next, we’ll continue with Athens’ Golden Age, talking about government, architecture, philosophy and more. Finally, the eighth-graders presented their “live” timelines about different countries’ Age of Exploration. We will continue to talk about the colonization of North America as this next quarter begins.

Mr. LaGuardia- 7th Grade Homeroom, English/Language Arts

The week of 10/16 consisted of many activities in order to wrap up 1st quarter grading. Students in ELA all took a hefty grammar quiz on 10/20, and are being offered the chance to do corrections due on 10/25. Ask the students–this week was one test and/or quiz after another!

HIGHLIGHTS:

8th graders cracked into the weird world of Edgar Allen Poe with “The Raven” and “The Tell-Tale Heart”.

7th Graders read the heartfelt poem “Mother to Son” by Langston Hughes, and then wrote their own poems with the same idea — Mother to Me.

Finally, 6th grade wrapped up their filmed Aesop’s Fables presentations as well as researched news articles for summarizing.

That’s all she wrote for quarter one! Here we come, quarter 2!

Ms. Kadlec- 6th Grade Homeroom, Religion

6th Grade has an awesome spiritual experience at Camp Damascus. The leaders, called missionaries, were young adult Catholics who were filled with joy, patience, understanding, and knowledge not only of science but more importantly, our faith.

The 7th graders are working on their individual Saint projects. On Monday, October 30th they will take on the persona of their saint and visit classrooms to introduce themselves and educate the younger students about one of our Catholic role models.

As part of the 8th grade curriculum on early Church history, they created presentations in small groups about one of the saints from the beginning of our Church (Post Apostolic Era).

Our HSP students will be more prepared for our upcoming Holy Day: The Feast of All Saints. Join us for Mass on Wednesday, November 1 at 8:15.

Mr. Mullen- 6th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics

Six graders this week will be wrapping up learning about order of operations and then moving on to learning about negative numbers. There will be a short quiz over order of operations on Friday.

Seventh graders will wrap up their video project to be part of the children’s book that they’re creating from the zoo field trip. They will also wrap up review of negative number operations including fractions and decimals. There will be a quiz over this later in the week.

8th graders will continue to learn about functions and relations and move into learning about linear functions and their graphs and equations. In lieu of a quiz students will be creating slideshow presentations describing what they’ve learned so far.
