BRUNSWICK, Ohio – Annabelle S, a student at Saint Ambrose Catholic School was one of 24 students from more than 206,000 applicants across the world, who were selected to participate in the NBA Math Hoops Global Championship in New York City.
Annabelle, representing the Cleveland Cavaliers, and Ashton, a student from Detroit, representing the Detroit Pistons, were the winners. The championship included teams of students from across the U.S., as well as teams from Australia and South Africa.
Annabelle had the opportunity to participate in Math Hoops through her math club for fourth and fifth-grade students at Saint Ambrose Catholic School in Brunswick. The Global Championship is sponsored by Learn Fresh Coaches Association. The 24 finalists not only gathered to compete but were treated to a tour of NYC.
“Annabelle is a Math Hoops Natural,” said her St. Ambrose math teacher and math coach, Rachael Buttitta. “She was always present for the after-school math club and even when she did not have a teammate, she played solo with ease. Annabelle is a strong math student who strives for accuracy. She puts 100 percent into all she does. She has amazing leadership qualities and was an excellent candidate to attend the championship.”
In addition, the parish is buzzing with the news because Annabelle also received the Top Sportsmanship Award. “Her sportsmanship is stellar and her willingness to support others is part of what makes her an amazing young lady,” Mrs. Buttitta added.
School Principal Lisa Cinadr said she could not have been more overjoyed about this opportunity for Annabelle and her representation of Saint Ambrose school and parish as well as the city of Cleveland and the Cleveland Cavaliers.
“I am so proud of Annbelle. Her willingness to step into her God-given strengths and stretch herself with the values she learns daily is exciting and an inspiration for all. God Bless Mrs. Buttitta for being one of our amazing teachers who strive to provide everything for every one of Angels every single day,” Cinadr added.
