“As engineers, we were going to be in a position to change the world – not just study it.”
—Henry Petroski, American engineer and author specializing in failure analysis
As the first STEAM school in the state of Ohio, we share our vision and mission of educating the leaders of tomorrow. We believe that strong partnerships enhance our students’ knowledge and problem-solving.
Our sixth-grade students had the opportunity for a STEAM learning day with General Motors. We are grateful for their partnership with our students for an incredible day of hands-on learning and problem-solving!
Thirteen engineers from the local GM Parma plant visited campus for a learning workshop with our 6th graders. They presented the different types of engineering jobs (civil, chemical, bio, electrical, manufacturing, etc) and explained what happens in the GM Parma plant. This learning opportunity provided greater depth and application to job functions within the engineering field for our students.
Saint Ambrose Students were then provided an engineering challenge in small groups to problem solve using the engineering and design process. Students were provided supply choices with cost and a budget and needed to determine the best resources to construct a tower in less than 30 minutes. When they were down to 10 minutes left, the students learned that sometimes workers are taken off current jobs and put on new jobs. They removed single ‘players’ in several groups to now leave less in the original and created 2 other groups from those to give only 10 minutes to complete the same task with less time.
At the end of the workshop visit, the students were able to ask questions and then they played a trivia game via Kahoot. Prizes were given throughout this entire event. This day proved to be a very successful learning opportunity for our students. We are so grateful to General Motors for providing this opportunity and to their team for building connections with our students!
We celebrated our top winners for the Tower Challenge: Allison, Mia D. , and Kacie, and Abby D, our top winner in the Kahoot challenge.
