serpent-moundThe fourth-graders have been learning about the amazing mounds created by Ohio’s early Native Americans. As an extension activity, the students paired up and began working together to research an assigned Ohio mound location. Their task was to find out who created the mound, where it’s located, when it was created, what the purpose of the mound was, and additional interesting facts. They also were instructed to draw connections or discuss a similarity between their mound and something in today’s society. Finally, they were told to give their opinion on this question: Should archaeologists continue to dig up artifacts and study the mounds, or should they leave the mounds alone? They needed to back up their position with reasons.

After the research phase, the student pairs began creating a Google slideshow presentation about their mound. This gives them a chance to present their research in an interesting way and also practice developing valuable computer skills. Next week, the students will teach the class about these incredible Ohio mounds. We are all eager to learn more!
