Saint Ambrose School received STEM School Designation Equivalent Status today making us the first STEM designated k-8 school in Medina County!

Saint Ambrose School continues to lead in STEM education.  This morning  Principal Cinadr and delegates traveled to Columbus to meet with the Ohio STEM Committee regarding our application, and we received STEM Designation Equivalent Status.  This makes us one of a distinguished group of STEM designated schools in the state of Ohio, and the first school to receive this status in Medina County!  We look forward to hosting the Ohio STEM committee later this spring and celebrating with a family STEM night.

Saint Ambrose School received official STEM School designation equivalent status from the Ohio STEM Committee as recognition of existing and emerging initiatives happening throughout the school and in the community, but also as catalyst to continue challenging our students, faculty, and partners for continuous improvement.

According to the Ohio Department of Education website “The goal of STEM schools is to foster intellectual, entrepreneurial and technical talent. This is vital to Ohio’s future economic growth and prosperity, which depends on an aligned education system to support the state’s economic development efforts and that helps all Ohio students become innovators and inventors, self-reliant and logical thinkers and technologically proficient problem solvers.  The Ohio Department of Education is a partner in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) “

The Ohio STEM Committee is a Committee comprised of state government and STEM experts across the state that review schools’ application to receive STEM School Designation Equivalent Status.  This year 30 schools across the state of Ohio applied seeking this coveted status. The K-8 grade designation status is new this year, but Saint Ambrose has been using a comprehensive K-8 STEM based education model for several years now.

Saint Ambrose School would like to thank their STEM partners for their dedication and collaboration and celebrates this step forward for their school and students with them:  STEM Accelerated Coding, the Ohio STEM Impact Network, Bob Gillingham Ford, Cisco, Cleveland State University, TRI-C, NOAA, Hyland Software, Rockwell Automation, Brownstone Realty,  Medina Animal Vet, United Cerebral Palsy, Fidelis Accounting and Consulting, the Cleveland Sight Center, Alphaport Inc, the Cleveland Metroparks, and Solutions Behavioral Health.

Principal Lisa Cinadr was thrilled to be in Columbus representing Saint Ambrose School this morning to receive this validating news and said “I am thrilled for our students!  This designation is a great testimony to the hard work of our faculty, staff, parents, partners, our parish family and all stakeholders who support the mission of Saint Ambrose School!  To God be the glory as we continue to provide ‘Everything for every student every day’.”

One of Saint Ambrose School’s most significant partners is the Ohio STEM Impact Network, which is composed of community partners, educators, law enforcement, and city officials and our partner in STEM education on campus.   The OSIN has partnered with Saint Ambrose School to help students find solutions to real world community issues.  The www.ohiostemimpact.org site is available for schools to collaborate with The Ohio STEM Impact Network and Saint  Ambrose School.

“I have been fortunate to be part of the STEM initiative at Saint Ambrose School through a business partnership. Together, we are leading the way with a fully embedded computer science and geospatial technology program within grades K-8. Specifically, for junior high students, we are also offering automation software testing, College Credit Plus for computer science courses, and internships that including accounting, medical, and computer science fields. Eighth grade students leave Saint Ambrose School with a technical resume.” -Mrs. Szijarto, Founder of STEM Accelerated Coding & The Ohio STEM Impact Network.

Saint Ambrose students have been working on several projects this year in collaboration with their STEM partners:

  1. Students created an app that helps homeless mission operators manage resources for the homeless and created new products to help keep the homeless warm during winter weather in greater Cleveland.
  2. Environmental research that involves locating flooding vulnerabilities using watershed analysis through a partnership with NOAA, The National Weather Service.
  3. The Drug Impact Project involves listening to stories from heroin addicts in recovery and analyzing brain scan imagery from those addicted to drugs.

Saint Ambrose students are earning high school credit for math classes through remote distance learning technology this year.  Next year, Saint Ambrose will be expanding their higher education opportunities for students by offering College Credit Plus (CCP) courses for junior high students through their established partnership with Stark State College.  This provides students the opportunity to earn College Credit before reaching high school.
