HSP Weekly Update

Mr. Dziedzicki- Assistant Principal, HSP Director, 8th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics

It has been great to have a few full weeks in a row. Remember that trend will end this week; no school on Friday 2/16 and Monday 2/19. HSP classes have been very active and full of life!

Math classes…

Algebra I classes have starting studying quadratic functions and will begin solving quadratic equations next week. 6th grade advanced math will be completing inequalities with an assessment next week.

Here are some thoughts from the rest of our HSP Faculty…

Mrs. Hamzik- 8th Grade Homeroom, Science

This week in science..

Sixth grade have been successful in drawing atoms and will begin examining chemical reactions.  They will learn how covalent bonds work in compounds.

Seventh grade will continue studying circuits.  They will examine parallel  circuits and the advantages as they practice wiring a basic  model room.

Eighth grade begins the study of the digestive system.  They will trace the journey of food and all of its nutrients as they evaluate diets and caloric needs of individuals.

Ms. Noga- 7th Grade Homeroom, Social Studies

Things are moving along nicely in HSP social studies classes!

The sixth-graders have been studying India, particularly the origins of Hinduism and Buddhism. This week, they will learn more about India’s later empires and some of their cultural achievements. There will be a test over India on Thursday, Feb. 22. A study guide will be put on Google Classroom before the end of this week.

In seventh grade, we finished up our unit on Rome. This week, we’ll continue talking about the Byzantine Empire as well as Mongol invasions and the situations that eventually led to the system of feudalism.

Finally, the eighth-graders took a test last week on the Revolutionary War, and we began talking about the Articles of Confederation. The students also created their own political cartoons. This week, we will study the creation and eventually the ratification of our nation’s most important document, the Constitution. The students will become experts on the Bill of Rights.

As this is a short school week, I hope you all have a wonderful long weekend!

Mr. LaGuardia- 7th Grade Homeroom, English/Language Arts

Hello again!

Middle school students had a heck of a week last week in English. We all signed onto the writing program, Criterion, and, because of this, students will be engaging in plenty of writing assignments throughout the rest of the year.

8th graders continued to read TKAM, finished the NO MAN LEFT BEHIND grammar activity on tough grammar concepts, responded to a writing prompt on Criterion, read their independent reading books, and thought critically about race relations in the South during the 30s.

7th graders finished The Giver! We went over Vocab concepts, continued to work on essays, finished the NO MAN LEFT BEHIND activity which resulted in quizzes on grammar, and began watching the film The Giver in order to draw connections between film and literature.

Finally, 6th graders read their eyes and ears off! We made a lot of progress on our class book, THE VIEW FROM SATURDAY, wrote on a Criterion prompt, started a new reading activity, ended NO MAN LEFT BEHIND with grammar quizzes, took a vocab quiz to round the week out.

I am very excited to get going this next week.

Ms. Kadlec- 6th Grade Homeroom, Religion

As we begin this holy season of Lent, the HSP students will be taking part in a variety of spiritual activities.  The 8th graders are beginning to plan for the all-school retreat experience which will take place before Easter.  Students in 7th grade will be creating a slide presentation to share with the school as a way to pray throughout Lent.  Now that the 6th Grade Bible Carnival is over, the students will be exploring stories of the Old Testament Patriarchs and Prophets.

Please remember to send in any palms from last year for our annual Palm Burning on Tuesday, 2/13.
