AngelBots, Art, Future City, STEM Bins, Science Fair. How are these connected?
AngelBots, our FIRST LEGO League team, consists of 6 young SAS students working together in conjunction with their coach and parent helpers. Many thanks to Rockwell Automation for their sponsorship of this important teaching and learning. AngelBots competed last weekend for the first time and, based on their work there, with tweaking as necessary, we look forward to a very successful team along with additional SAS teams being created. Congratulations to our SAS students whose artwork was submitted and exhibited at the Padua Franciscan High School’s Elementary Art Exhibit! The awards ceremony was held last Sunday and the students’ work will be on display in the high school’s library for another week. Keegan, Emma and Jenna received Second, Third and Second places (consecutively) in their age groups. Jenna even received a “People’s Choice” award from a young artist from another school. GO ANGELS!
Congratulations to our Future City team of 26 8th Grade and 7th Grade students who invented, designed, engineered, created and presented at yesterday’s Ohio Region Future City tournament. I’m very proud of Ms. Hamzik, their Science Teacher, Mrs. Koch, their Engineer partner, and our team whose journey that began in September ended with a Third Place in the state of Ohio, and three Special Awards: “Best Moving Part,” “Most Environmentally Friendly,” “Best Computer City” (Katie S.). The beautiful sunset that graces the horizon of their future city incorporates the talents of one of our student artists. The team worked through the engineering design process and used creativity, communication, collaboration and critical thinking to create, “Pervenche,” their city of the future. GO ANGELS!
What do you do when you’re stuck inside for recess because of weather? You play with STREAM of course! Our First Grade teacher, Mrs. Whitmer, and our Fourth Grade teacher, Mrs. Parente, have created bins of “stuff” – pvc pipes, recycled plastic, etc., for students to use the 4 C’s – creativity, communication, collaboration, communication and critical thinking for some brain-bending recreation.
Our 7th Grade Science Fair students are busy putting the final touches on their projects for our school science fair coming up during Catholic Schools Week the last week of January. This is another critical learning experience for young minds. Using the scientific method to arrive at a conclusion is an important, cross-curricular way that SAS goes above the status quo to help students learn skills they will need for success in high school, college and the work force. We thank in advance the many partners and judges who assist our students in the process. GO ANGELS!
STREAM means, “Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts and Math – all ways that our students are being formed for their unknown futures.
