HSP Weekly Update
Mr. Dziedzicki- Assistant Principal, HSP Director, 8th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics
Each week we will be unveiling a new habit that we will focus on to reach our school acronym: REACH
Week 1: R- Resilient- Stick to it! Persevering in task through to completion; remaining focused. Looking for ways to reach your goal when stuck. Not giving up.
Week 2: E- Empowered- Take your time! Thinking before acting; remaining calm, thoughtful and deliberative.
This week: A- Accurate- Check it again! Always doing your best. Setting high standards. Checking and finding ways to improve constantly.
Math classes…
Algebra I classes will begin studying polynomials. 6th grade advanced math will continue solving equations, as well as taking part in a grade wide project that Mr. Mullen highlights below.
Here are some thoughts from the rest of the HSP faculty…
Mrs. Hamzik- 8th Grade Homeroom, Science
This week in science……
Eighth grade is finishing up the study of geologic time and will be moving onto mapping.
Seventh grade completed worm dissection. They currently are investigating environmental issues and finalizing science fair topics.
Sixth grade has been culturing bacteria and mold samples and observing the growth. They will be fermenting yeast this week.
Mrs. Noga- 7th Grade Homeroom, Social Studies
The students are hard at work in social studies class!
The sixth-graders wrapped up our unit on Mesopotamia and Babylon with a quiz last week. We now begin our cross-curricular unit on Egypt. I am so excited for the students to engage in creative activities about a plethora of intriguing topics, including pyramids, mummification, pharaohs, and hieroglyphics!
The seventh-graders have been learning about the Golden Age of Greece, particularly Greek architecture, drama, philosophy, and more. This week, we will talk about Alexander the Great and the spread of Hellenistic culture. There will be a test Friday over all of these topics and more (a study guide is on Google Classroom). After we conclude our unit on Greece, we’ll move on to Rome!
Finally, the eighth-graders have been learning about early colonies. They enjoyed revisiting Roanoke and Jamestown, and I was happy to see that they remembered most of the information I taught them in fifth grade! We will review exploration and early colonies at the beginning of the week, and there will be a test Wednesday (a study guide is on Google Classroom). After that, the students will begin a fun 13 colonies in-class project to take us into Thanksgiving break.
Have a blessed week!
Mr. LaGuardia- 7th Grade Homeroom, English/Language Arts
For such a short week, we sure did some amazing work. 8th graders made headway on memorizing their lines for the upcoming Christmas Play. 7th Graders wrote in their class journals, reading and reflecting on selected works. 6th grader pushed themselves by studying grammar exercises on capitalization and their/they’re/there. It was a real nitty-gritty kind of week, and we all loved it.
Ms. Kadlec- 6th Grade Homeroom, Religion
It was so good to meet many of your during conferences over the past two weeks. The HSP students have been discussing many important topics. We determined the difference between vocations and careers. We also learned ways to discern the plan that God has for us. The 6th graders are planning the upcoming prayer service for Thanksgiving which is on Tuesday, November 21 at 9:oo a.m. Please join us if you are able. Our 7th and 8th Graders are finishing up the Theology of the Body Program.
Mr. Mullen- 6th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics
Six grade mathematicians this week will be participating in an integrated unit of study on ancient Egypt. For math, they will be studying the great pyramids of Giza learning about the geometry behind building the pyramids as well as getting to construct one of their own scale models.
Students will be asked to keep up their practice with using negative numbers to add, subtract, multiply, divide there will be a short quiz over this material on Friday.
Seventh grade mathematicians will be moving on from simplifying variable expressions to solving one to multi-step equations. Early in the week, they will make the abstract nature of solving equations concrete with using scales to understand the idea of balance. Later in the week, they will be opportunities to practice solving two-step equations and then multistep equations with distributive property. On Friday, there will be a short quiz over simplifying variable expressions, the distributive property, and solving one and two-step equations.
8th grade math students will be wrapping up the short review unit on solving proportions with some real world problem solving practice. This will lead into looking at proportional relationships in tables and on graphs. These proportional relationships translate into slope and rate of change to begin our unit on linear equations.
