Both the fourth- and fifth-graders wrapped up fun social studies units before our break and took assessments on Tuesday. In preparation, we played a tried-and-true favorite, “Basketapple.” This game requires students to work in groups to write answers to various questions on white dry-erase boards. When a group is the first one to get a question correct, its members have a chance to take one point or try for more. Instead of playing basketball, I have a squishy apple, and the kids must shoot it into the basket from behind several lines, worth either two, three, four or five points. It’s interesting to see which strategies the students employ during the game. Some are more conservative and go for the guaranteed points, while others are risk takers. In any case, the kids love Basketapple and look forward to it!

I wish all of you a blessed Thanksgiving and a relaxing break!
