Reminders: Summer Reading project for grades 6,7 &8 due Tuesday, September 6. Test on novels for grades 7 & 8 on Tuesday also. Students have a study guide that can be used for review.
In 6th grade this week we analyzed the poem “Oranges.” Students learned how to make inferences through other students’ modeling. We also completed our first unit in vocabulary. Next week we will be reading our first story in Journeys and discussing author’s purpose and details that help in determining the purpose.
The 7th grade did background information for the novel The Outsiders. We discussed social groups and did an exercise on students’ opinions toward certain statements. We reviewed for our test on Flipped and talked about their summer reading project. It was fun to hear what their grandparents did during the summer for fun and compare it to today. They discussed why it is important to spend time with their elders. Next week we will read The Outsiders and complete various activities associated with the book.
The 8th grade completed a “Character Creature” activity. We read a short story and they listed characteristics for the main character. Then, they had to associate those qualities with 5 different animals. (brave – lion) Finally, they drew the new creature and wrote an explanation for it. Next week we will research an “unfamous person of history.” Students will research the creator of an everyday object. (post it note, paper clip etc..) They will need to explain how things would be different without the object. Students will be graded on presentation as well as information.
Have a good long weekend.
