After receiving a postcard from an elementary school in Massachusetts as part of “The Great Mail Race,” I decided to embark upon this project with my classes. Students in fourth-grade social studies researched various points of interest and landmarks in our great state of Ohio and then practiced their informational writing skills by composing a paragraph with several facts and creating a postcard. They then drew and colored a detailed picture of one of the landmarks on the other side of the postcard. Next, each student was given a state in the U.S. and had to find an elementary school to which he or she could send the postcard, along with the directions for “The Great Mail Race.” He or she found the location of the school and worked on properly addressing an envelope. We recently mailed the postcards, and we are eager to see if any schools send us a postcard back!
