Happy New Year! We hope you and your family had a wonderfully blessed Christmas. Today every HSP student was encouraged to write down a goal or resolution for 2017. These goals will be posted on our promise poster in HSP hallway. It was wonderful to see how many students immediately set goals for 2017!

The end of January brings Catholic Schools Week and many fun activities. We are looking forward to a fantastic second semester and 2017!

ELA news:
8th grade – The 8th grade will be reading To Kill A Mockingbird. Before we begin our reading, we will do some research about events that were happening at the time the story was written. Students will create timelines to depict the events and how they correspond to the novel. In addition, we will learn about the life of Harper Lee, the author, and compare her life to the main character’s. Various activities will help students comprehend the story and learn new vocabulary. Story elements will be discussed.
After we finish our novel study, we will begin our research papers. We will review MLA format and how to cite information. Information will be presented at the end as an oral presentation. Students will be graded on written paper as well as oral presentation. Details will come later.
7th grade – We will learn MLA format and how to apply it to their Science Fair papers. I will introduce them to the title page and Works Cited page. They will receive a grade from me, as well as Mrs. Hamzik, on their Works Cited page.

I am going to review grammar rules, paragraphing, sentence structure etc…in order for the students to create a well written paper.
Then, we will begin reading The Giver. This is sometimes a difficult book for students to “get into,” but once they do, they love it. We will have various activities to learn vocabulary and check comprehension. Students will participate in group activities to create character maps where they will have to cite information from the novel to support their character’s qualities. The Giver also offers many writing activities.
6th grade – The 6th grade will begin reading The View from Saturday. There are many activities that go along with this novel. We will review exposition, rising action, climax, falling action and resolution before beginning to read. Students will learn about the life of the author, as well, E.L. Konigsburg. Character traits will be discussed along with theme, tone and mood.
After reading the novel, we will be writing some essays. MLA format will be introduced/reviewed.
