Here are some thoughts from the rest of the HSP faculty…
Mrs. Hamzik- 8th Grade Homeroom, Science
As we arrive at the mid point of January and begin the second semester the biggest scientific event seems to be the weather.
The eighth grade Future City team will be traveling to Columbus this weekend since the competition was postponed this past weekend because of weather.
Seventh grade will finish up their science fair projects this week and present them on Tuesday, January 23.
Sixth grade will continue their study of chemistry in examining changes in matter.
Mrs. Noga- 7th Grade Homeroom, Social Studies
I hope everyone has had a tremendous start to 2018. One of these days we’ll have a five-day school week again!
The sixth-graders have started studying India. This week, they’ll present skits they wrote about the Harappan civilization. We will also begin talking about the origins of Hinduism.
The seventh-graders have finished their Rome project. Pictures of the final product are below. As you can see, they did an absolutely amazing job! This week, we’ll talk about Julius Caesar and the height of the Roman Empire.
Finally, the eighth-graders are continuing their “history lab” about the causes of the Revolutionary War. They made Google slideshows describing the various British acts against the colonists (the Sugar Act, the Stamp Act, etc.). This week, we’ll discuss the Boston Massacre, Boston Tea Party and other crucial events that triggered the revolution.
Have a wonderful week!
Ms. Kadlec- 6th Grade Homeroom, Religion
What a crazy start to the year! Cold days, freeze days, blizzard coming days, oh my! The students have adjusted well in HSP Religion class. They enjoyed our human Christmas tree activity and experienced a Lectio Divina meditation based on the Feast of the Epiphany. Our seminarian, Josh Cochran visited with all but one of the classes for interesting Q & A sessions. We are planning to reschedule the class (8B) that he wasn’t able to see.
The eighth grade students are creating review games in small groups to share with one another. In seventh grade, students are re-writing some of their favorite parables in modern day settings. They will be sharing these “updated” stories with creative skits by the end of this week.
The sixth grade students are learning about the organization of the books of the Old Testament and will be coming up with ways to learn them all.
Thank you as always for all your support!
Mr. Mullen- 6th Grade Homeroom, Mathematics
This week six graders will begin a project where they will use ratios and proportions to build their own cross. They will have a guest speaker, Josh the seminarian, who will come in and discuss the history of the cross as a symbol of Christian faith. Students will do research to figure out the correct dimensions and ratios of cross piece to vertical piece used in the cross of Jesus Christ. They will also Measure various size replicas and compare them to what is known about the original cross.
Seventh graders, this week, will begin to study the connection between algebra and geometry. They will begin a short project where they will create their own visual picture book of all the geometry concepts studied throughout sixth, seventh and eighth grade. They will then use this picture book as a reference throughout the next couple months of studying geometry and its connection to algebra.
This week eighth graders will be using their knowledge of linear functions to apply to some real life scenarios and problem solving.
