Visual Art Weekly Update for

Monday Wednesday, & Friday

March 6th, 8th, & 10th

Preschool: Students painted birds on branches as a welcoming of spring. They built skills and knowledges identifying shapes. They learned that the little birdies are part of God’s Creation.

Kindergarten: Students developed their imagination while watercolor painting. They learned many new techniques while utilizing their paint brushes and the water.

First: Students worked colloborarivewlry creating a bottle cap art project on canvas. In small groups students painted the bottle caps. While others were waiting they started an Earth Day poster Contest. The theme this year is “healthy Soils are Full Of Life”.

Second: Students observed artwork by the artists: Bridget Riley and Victor Vasserely. They learned about OPT Art. They created an original optical illusion design using pattern and repetition. Students manipulated the elements of art by using space to create “Illusion” of movements. On a flat surface. Mrs. Shreve’s class had Stations of the Cross.

Third:  Students observed artwork by the artists: Bridget Riley and Victor Vasserely. They learned about OPT Art. They created an original optical illusion design using pattern and repetition. Students manipulated the elements of art by using space to create “Illusion” of movements. On a flat surface.

Fourth: Students finished their watercolor painting of  THE MAGICAL GARDEN OF CLAUDE MONET”. They created their own watercolor painting of water lilies. They also learned about the style of impressionism.

Fifth: Students finished their watercolor painting of  THE MAGICAL GARDEN OF CLAUDE MONET”. They created their own watercolor painting of water lilies. They also learned about the style of impressionism.

Sixth: Students finished their OPT ART project. Afterwards, they started experimented with watercolor paints.

Seventh: Students finished their design for the “2017 Earth Day” Poster contest. Each student learned about the process of art criticism. Afterwards, each student started a new project on watercolor painting. They learned new techniques:

Watercolor Washes: Mixtures of damp pigment diluted with water.  When more water is added, the color washes become lighter in value.  Washes are usually laid down over large areas of paper, but thinned colors can also be applied to small areas or lines.

  •        Some are laid down on dampened paper where colors are allowed to blend softly together.
  •        Others are brushed onto dry paper where edges are soft and crisp.
  •        Washes applied over other dry washes (glazes) create deeper values and more complex color areas.

Glazes: Refers to the technique of applying a transparent wash over a dried color area to achieve luminous and richness.  Glazes are effective when contrasting hues are used: warm over cool, cool over warm, red over yellow etc.  Glazes must remain transparent to be effective.

  •        Change a color
  •        Enrich a color
  •        Neutralize or gray a color
  •        Create cool, shadow areas
  •        Darken areas

Different Techniques:

  •        Wet-in-wet refers to adding a wet color-loaded brush to the wet surface of a paper.  Soft edges, running colors, and fuzzy blends are the result.  As the surface dries, newly added shapes will have harder edges.
  •        Wet-on-dry refers to large light value washes are put down first and allowed to dry.  The “build-up” process begins when glazes are added, often allowing some areas of the initial washes to remain as is.  More glazes are added when dry- a process that is repeated until the final details are added.
  •        Dry brush requires very little water as the brush is used to make broken color areas or marks.  To make dry brush marks, water and color are squeezed or blotted from the brush, which is dragged over the surface of the paper. Dry brush is hardly ever used to fill an entire painting, but is best to create areas of interest that contrast with wet wash areas.

Eighth:Students finished their design for the “2017 Earth Day” Poster contest.  Each student learned about the process of art criticism. Each student started researching cultural masks and their significance. They started creating a design on the mask. In the next couple of weeks they will paint it and decorate it with items that resemble the style of the culture. Students in mr. Bolin’s class started painting Water Bottle’s for a Sculpture inspired by the artist Dale Chihuly

For HSP students………

Students in art class will be learning about the  American Glass Sculptor Dale Chihuly. Each student will participate in a collaborative art project. We need one used (washed out with soap) water bottle from each student. They will paint these bottles to create  implied glass sculpture.
