It has been a very exciting week in first grade!
Our week started out with a visit from Johnny Appleseed. We also sang about Johnny Appleseed and apples in music and participated in a technology activity in which we coded instructions to help Johnny Appleseed plant his apple seeds! In art, we are working with Mrs. Kinley to learn how to create a three dimensional design of an apple on the Chrome Books! The students will then select the apple design they like best and we will have it printed out on a 3-D printer!
Johnny Appleseed and apples were also incorporated into science in which we went through the process of an experiment and made a prediction and followed up with a conclusion. We predicted whether or not an apple would sink or float in water.
In math, we used our engineering skills to create an apple plate or holder using a variety of materials so we could help Johnny Appleseed carry all of his apples. The students worked in groups and used their creativity. The students were then given the opportunity to test their apple plate or holder to see if it works. I am happy to report that all projects were successful! It was so nice to see the excitement on the children’s faces! We concluded the activity by recording data on Google Forms. We recorded the materials we used, whether or not our apple plate or holder worked, and what materials we would change if we conducted this activity in the future.
In language arts, we continued to read stories in our Super Kids books. We also worked on story comprehension and using illustrations to assist us with comprehension. We are also learning about the use of quotation marks and the difference between a period, question mark and exclamation mark.
In grammar we are working on writing a good sentence. We are checking for an uppercase letter at the beginning of a sentence and a period at the end of the sentence. We are also working on reading our work over to make sure it is correct and our sentences are telling us something.
In math we worked on mentally adding and subtracting ten to a given number. We also began working with the tens and ones place of a number.
The week concluded with Special Person’s Day. It was night to meet all of the special people who came for this activity.
I am looking forward to another exciting week in first grade! :)
