It has been another exciting week in first grade!

On Monday we had a fun time celebrating Halloween at the fall festival, which was held in Hilkert Hall.  The children rotated through a variety of stations in which they played games and won prizes.  At the conclusion of the fall festival, we had a class group photo taken near some bales of hay.  Everyone had an exciting visit.

Our day concluded with the annual Halloween parade.  It was so nice to see the families come out to watch.  The weather was perfect too! :)

We also began Cogat testing.  Cogat testing will continue for this upcoming week.  Please be sure to have your child bring two sharp #2 pencils to school.  In addition, please be sure your child has a good night’s sleep and eats a healthy breakfast.  Testing is based on skills that your child already has.  There is nothing that they can study for in advance.

We also focused instruction on the following:

Using touch point math to add.  On Friday, the children were introduced to adding six to a number.   The number six is the first digit that we learned to tap two times on each point.  The children are doing very well with this method of addition problem solving.   The students were also introduced to the term commutative property.  They are also able to recognize math problems that demonstrate this property.  The students are also able to write problems that adhere to this property as well.

The students have been learning about main characters, the setting of a story, identifying the problem in a story as well as the solution.

In Religion, the students began to learn about creation and Adam and Eve.

In Social Studies the children have been learning about respect.  We also began to learn about election day.  On Monday, we are going to learn about both presidential candidates and have a class vote.

It has been a pleasure meeting parents at conferences this past Thursday.  I am looking forward to meeting with the remainder of the parents on Thursday.

Please be sure to stop by the classroom to visit during Open House tomorrow morning from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Have a wonderful week! :)
