This week in Visual Art for Monday, Wednesday, & Friday October 24th, 26th, & 28th

Preschool, Kindergarten and First:

Each student learned how to shape clay with their hands. They created a three-dimensional rounded coil pot. Reviewing a hand-built clay object they demonstrated their skill level. Next week students will paint designs and patterns on their pottery.

Second: Each student learned about the art technique of “weaving”. They designed a tree acorn and weaved together the top.

Weaving is a method of textile production in which two distinct sets of yarns or threads are interlaced at right angles to form a fabric or cloth. Similar methods are knitting, felting, and braiding or plaiting. The longitudinal threads are called the warp and the lateral threads are the weft or filling.

Third and Fourth: Each student learned about Symmetry in art. They designed a spider that contained a reflective symmetrical design. They also had the opportunity to make their spider unique by adding bright colors.

The term symmetry is used both in the arts and in the sciences. In art, symmetry is often used as an aesthetic element. It is often used, to mean a kind of balance in which the corresponding parts are not necessarily alike but only similar.

Fifth: Students experimented with the art medium “Pastels”. They blended the chalk pastels defining the art element of “Value”. They developed new skills, knowledge, comprehension of elements of design (color, shape, and line).

Sixth: Created a silhouette scene of the night sky.

The silhouette in art, media and illustrations. Since the late 18th century, silhouette artists have also made small scenes cut from card and mounted on a contrasting background like the portraits. These pictures, known as “paper cuts”, were often, but not necessarily, silhouette images.

Seventh: Each student design a “Papel Picado” for Dia De Los Muertos. This is a cross curricular project with Spanish Class.

Papel picado (“perforated paper, literally peckered paper”) is a decorative craft made out of paper cut into elaborate designs. It is considered a Mexican folk art. The designs are commonly cut from tissue paper using a guide and small chisels, creating as many as forty banners at a time.

Eighth :Students continued working on TinkerCad a Cross Curricular Project. This project utilizes technology as a tool to create. Students are learning about graphics and engineering.* Students finished their coil pottery. They finalized their structures by refining and revising areas of interest.
